Acoustics / Loudspeaker Coverage Software — Practical Comparison

There isn’t one “best” package. You pick based on whether you need full room acoustics (RT60, STI, reflections) or just coverage / SPL / array aiming. Manufacturer tools are usually free and very accurate for their own boxes. Independent packages cost money but work across brands.

1. Full acoustic simulation (rooms, STI, coverage, auralization)

  • AFMG EASE — Still the industry default for AV / install. Loudspeaker coverage, mapping, STI, ray tracing, auralization. Huge GLL library from almost every manufacturer. EASE Address is the one you want for 70/100 V ceiling-speaker grids (density, overlap, paging STI). Not cheap; steep learning curve.

  • AFMG EASE Focus 3 — Free. Line-array / point-source aiming, coverage, SPL. Uses GLL files. Does not do full room acoustics. Fine for hang plots and first-pass coverage.

If you only do distributed ceiling speakers + paging, EASE Address plus manufacturer GLL/CLF data is usually enough. If you do theatres, houses of worship, or anything with serious reflections, you want full EASE, CATT, or Odeon.

2. Manufacturer array / coverage tools (branded, mostly free)

These are what most of us actually use day-to-day for hangs and coverage maps. Locked to that brand’s cabinets.

  • Martin Audio DISPLAY — MLA / WPS / Torus etc. Free. DISPLAY
  • EAW Resolution 2 — Adaptive / KF / RSX. Free. Resolution 2
  • NEXO NS-1 — Geo / P+ / STM. Free (registration). NS-1
  • Adamson Blueprint AVBlueprint AV
  • RCF Shape Designer — HDL / TTL. Check RCF support/downloads.

  • JBL / HARMAN — No single “JBL coverage app” anymore. Use EASE / EASE Focus with official GLL files, plus Performance Manager / Venue tools where applicable. GLL download via JBL Pro or HARMAN.

3. Ceiling speakers / 70–100 V distributed systems

  • EASE Address — Purpose-built for ceiling grids, density, overlap, and speech intelligibility. This is the one consultants expect to see.
  • Manufacturer online calculators (AtlasIED, TOA, Bosch/EV, QSC, Biamp, Extron, SoundTube, etc.) — Fine for a first pass, not a substitute for Address or a full model.
  • Import that brand’s GLL into EASE Focus or full EASE if you need a mapped SPL plot in a real room.

4. Ceiling microphones / conferencing coverage

Different problem (pickup pattern, lobes, exclusion zones), different tools.

  • Shure Designer — Best free tool in this category. MXA920 / MXA910 / MXA710 coverage, lobes, Dante, system diagrams. Shure Designer

  • Biamp Tesira + Parlé — Tesira software for TCM-X / TesiraFORTÉ. biamp.com
  • Q-SYS Designer — Full system (DSP + some loudspeaker / NM-T1 style conferencing). Free designer: Q-SYS Designer
  • Audio-Technica / ClearOne / Nureva — Each has its own config / coverage helper; none are as complete as Shure Designer for multi-lobe ceiling arrays.

How I’d actually choose

  • Touring / install line arrays of one brand → that manufacturer’s tool (ArrayCalc, Soundvision, MAPP, PREVIEW, DISPLAY).
  • Mixed-brand install + ceiling grid + STI report → EASE + EASE Address, GLL files from each vendor.
  • Quick hang / coverage check, no budget → EASE Focus 3 (free) + manufacturer GLL.
  • Ceiling mics / huddle / boardroom → Shure Designer first, then the DSP vendor’s tool (Tesira, Q-SYS, ADECIA).
  • Serious room acoustics / auralization → EASE 5, CATT, or Odeon — not a manufacturer array calculator.

Links go stale. Always grab installers from the manufacturer’s official software/support page (account required for L-Acoustics, Meyer, d&b, etc.). Avoid random “download” mirrors.

If you say what you’re designing (ceiling grid only, HOWs, stadium hang, boardrooms with MXA/TCC, etc.) people can narrow this to two tools instead of the whole list.
