Revit vs MagiCAD for Low Voltage / IT / Telecom

Both can handle LV, data, telecom, security, fire alarm, AV and similar systems, but they work at very different levels of intelligence and automation.

Native Revit
  • Place devices using Communication, Data, Telephone, Security, Fire Alarm, Nurse Call families (or generic electrical fixtures). Racks, cabinets, patch panels and server equipment are usually custom or manufacturer families.
  • Model pathways with cable trays, conduits, wireways and fittings. You can do 3D routing, hangers, fill calculations (manually or with simple schedules) and clash detection.
  • Very limited system intelligence. Power/lighting circuits work reasonably well; data/telecom/security are mostly geometric + parameters (you add shared parameters for port counts, cable type, from-to, rack U-position, etc.).
  • Documentation is standard Revit: plans, sections, 3D, tags, legends and schedules. Cable schedules and connection lists are almost always custom (schedules + Dynamo or Excel export).
  • Everything is possible, but it is labour-intensive. Good results require a solid family library, project parameters and usually Dynamo scripts for numbering, cable lists and consistency.

MagiCAD Electrical (on top of Revit)
  • Much larger ready-made intelligent product libraries (devices, trays, conduits, cabinets). Objects already know connection points, installation codes and calculation data.
  • Real network/circuit logic that also covers extra-low-voltage and communication systems in many cases. Devices can be connected automatically or semi-automatically.
  • Far better cable and tray tools: routing assistance, automatic or assisted cable pulling, length calculation, fill-rate checks and more realistic 3D cable representation.
  • Calculations and reports out of the box (cable lists, material take-offs, connection schedules, sometimes schematic-style outputs). Less need for Dynamo or Excel gymnastics.
  • Electrical drawing production is faster and more standardised (symbols, dimensioning, annotation styles typical for electrical contractors).
  • Still Revit underneath, so coordination, worksharing and clash detection stay the same, just with smarter objects.

Practical difference on a typical IT/Telecom job
  • Small/simple project or you already have a mature Revit LV template + Dynamo scripts → native Revit is often enough and cheaper.
  • Medium/large project with lots of cable tray, structured cabling, racks, many device types and you need proper cable schedules + installation drawings quickly → MagiCAD pays for itself in modelling speed and reduced errors.
  • Neither is a dedicated structured-cabling design tool (no automatic TIA/ISO link budgets, no full fibre management, no iBwave-style wireless). For that you still combine with specialist software or heavy customisation.

In short: Revit can model everything geometrically and produce decent documentation if you invest in families and scripts. MagiCAD makes the same work significantly faster, more consistent and calculation-aware, especially for the electrical/cable side of LV and telecom installations. Most offices that do this regularly end up using MagiCAD (or a similar electrical add-in) on top of Revit rather than native Revit alone.
